Life isn't fair

I wish I understood conservatives better.

I wish I understood why Sen. Jim BunningSen. Jim Bunning, R-Wildcats, has spent several days blocking the extension of unemployment benefits and a little less time than that whining that having to do this made him miss a basketball game he wanted to see.

It's easy to see Bunning is sort of screwed. He barely won re-election last time out and he's pretty much being forced into retirement because the Republican Party sees him as sort of an embarrassment.

But how do you vote again giving people who have nothing a little bit of help in the short run? It isn't as if they were following the teachings of Jesus, who told a rich young man to sell everything he had and give the money to the poor.

I know Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Asshat, said that when you give people unemployment benefits, it makes it less likely they'll look for a job, but I'm reminded of what Harry Hopkins said in the early days of the New Deal when a conservative senator made an argument like that.

The senator said people would be better off in the long run without help.

Hopkins replied that people don't eat in the long run. They eat every day.

I suppose the question I would ask people opposed to programs like this is a simple one:

What do you expect to happen to the people you don't help?

I know some conservatives are Social Darwinists, and to them the "thinning of the herd" is one of the things that makes our country stronger. But what do you tell a 5-year-old kid who's hungry and has no place to sleep?

Sorry, kid, you should have picked better parents?

Do you just tell the kid he's screwed? Or do you tell him to sell apples or matches on a street corner while reading Horatio AlgerHoratio Alger books at night?

This is what's so disgusting about it all. A total waste of skin like Paris HiltonParis Hilton can live a life style only the pharaohs used to live just because her grandfather struck it rich, while millions of children who never even knew they had grandparents are starving.

You can whine all you want about Socialism, but if you look at the root word all it means is that the community matters, that we help each other because every time we see a homeless person, we should thank God it isn't us.

Any of us can say all we want about how we made it through our own efforts, but most of us were incredibly lucky. First, we were born American and most of us were born into families where we had food, clothes and shelter.

We had the chance to go to schools where we were allowed to learn, and those of us who were white had nothing working against us when we applied for our first jobs.

Sure, we worked hard.

But why is it fair that a kid born black, poor or homeless should have to work five times as hard to accomplish the same thing?

I know life isn't fair, but that doesn't mean we should just accept that and write off millions of people.

So tell me, conservatives ... What would you do about the children?

Just throw them away?

At least Newt GingrichNewt Gingrich suggested orphanages, although I'm sure the fundie crowd wouldn't want government breaking up families.

I'm waiting.

Mike your so hell bent on socialism, why don't you get up off your big butt and do something for them instead of whining and complaining all the time. Your quote from the bible is wrong, it say's for him to sell all his possesions and follow me.

The poor were here when Jesus was and they will be here when this planet burns with fervent heat.(Theres your global warming). Take your butt to one of these socialist countries and go out beyond the Hilton and Sandals and see the peace loving Communities as you say, they are starving and homeless.

I just got back from Haiti and Jamaica on humantarian missions and its not a pretty sight, I go every January. I work food banks in North Georgia two weekends each month and there is no comparing the poor there to our poor. Before you go running your mouth on something you know very little about maybe you should go to some of the utter most parts and take a look around. If you are doing next to nothing to help these folks, then maybe you should stick to your political BS.

Glad to hear it, Pollard, but I'm not even talking about Haiti. I actually think we ought to help our own children too.

But definitely, good for you. You are not part of the problem.

Pollard - how do the poor in the countries you visit (or let's say some you do not - like China, South Korea, Vietnam) stack up to the poor in the United States?

They don't.

What would I do for the kids? Everything I could afford to do. EVERY THING. EVERY LAST THING. BUT...I'm NOT giving it to the government to do it.....after they piss most of it away first.

Don't ever discount the charity that Americans inherently have in their souls. This country took care of their own long before welfare became first fiddle.

Amen. Poor Jen. All I can say is, that girl in the picture is either a wolverine in bed or extremely rich.

That picture is ridiculous. At least she could have brushed her teeth on her wedding day. Stop misquoting Bible verses; you're morphing into Sean Hannity. Senators Kyl and Bunning are representatives of the states of Arizona and Kentucky respectively. No punchline needed after that sentence.

as for socialism if you want that you are out of your mind...socialists prefer very large and powerful governments (China, the old Soviet Union, Cuba, and France to some extent). Capitalists prefer small & limited governments (United States, Australia).though with Bush and Obama's help we are headed in that direction...remember any gov't that is powerfu7l enough to give you what you need is also powerful enough to take it all away!!!! we need to get back to a small gov't like our founders(remember them?)intended for us to have...i also have a question for Michael...in defense of voting against unemployment extensions, i think someone once wrote an article saying to pay down debt we all need to share the pain...do you believe in that or were you just blowing smoke? At some point we need to stop with the federal programs don't we? We have to pay down the debt or we're all in trouble

Maryann, in other countries the poor have no access to the programs our poor have, It's not the idea of them accepting the fact they are poor as much as they have never had the chance for anything else, take Jamaica, this country is so poor once you step outide the borders of the tourist destinations and head up into the mountains, there is no hotwater, no plumbing as we know it, most of the food they eat we throw out as scrapes. The average home size is around 200sq ft(most of our garages we park our cars in are 250sq ft. I could go on and on about their living conditions, I want even mention the rats, ants and roaches.

What amazes me is the number of children being raised by the grand mothers, because the mothers take off after having kids and there never was a father. These children are made to go to school at an early age, mostly run by the church. They welcome us more than our own poor.

When I work the food banks here, one in the city, the other in the foothills of the Appalachian mtns I see a difference in the attitude of the poor. It has nothing to do with skin color, but a mentality of I'm poor and deserve this VS Thank you for caring enough to take the time. I have no answer on how to stop this, to be honest, I don't think anyone has, you can take all the money in the world and redistribute it and there would still be poor and needy people.

When I hear educated people with knowledge or money, who pretend to have answers and all they want to do is throw money to the local government to help the downtrodden it's nothing but a joke. You can watch on TV how Brad/Angelina or Maddonna go to these countries and save an orphan, how they pick and choose which child to take, but look how they step over hundreds of kids, they paid the government of these countries to be able to remove a child. Why not call them modern day slave masters. If their desire were genuine, they would go it alone without all the cameras and media. I do not follow Opra, but a least she builds schools and hospitals.

Mike you said you wern't talking about Haiti, yet It was you who quoted scripture about Jesus, he told us to go out to all the world. There are enough workers for the fields here, if they would get up off their rears and tend to their little corner of the pasture.
As a matter of fact we have our own little Haiti here in the USA, go up into Kentucky or West Virgina. I mention these two states out of experience, you can find them in any state but these states just flat out ignore them. In Haiti, they have warm weather year round, in the two states I listed above, they have to deal with hot weather and freezing temps.

An alarming new study shows that health care costs increased last year at the fastest rate in more than a half century.

Health care spending rose to an estimated $2.5 trillion in 2009, or $8,047 per person -- and is now projected to nearly double by 2019. If we don't act, this growing burden will mean more lost jobs, more families pushed into bankruptcy, and more crushing debt for our nation.

The conclusion is clear: This isn't a problem we can kick down the road for another decade -- or even another year. We need to pass health reform now.

We're incredibly close. But too many in Washington are now saying that we should delay or give up on reform entirely. So we need to make it crystal clear that Americans understand the stakes for our economy and our lives, and that we want action.

Can you write a letter to the editor of your local paper right now?

In just five minutes of your time, you can tell thousands of readers about this new report on spiraling costs, and why abandoning reform is just not an option.

You can also help by posting this note on Facebook, letting your friends know about the new costs study and asking them to join you in writing a letter to a local paper.

President Obama and many allies in Congress are working hard to finish the job -- but we can't rest until it's done. Your note will help break through the Washington spin and show members of Congress and the media what local voters really believe. Click here to get started:

It's clear that we're in the fight of our lives to pass real reform. But after a century of trying, the finish line is finally in sight. As President Obama reminded us all in his State of the Union address, we're fighting for our families and our country -- and we don't quit.

Thanks for making it possible,

Mitch
