At least one Republican has Gotten the Message
Thom plus logo

At least one Republican has gotten the message. Senator John Thune from South Dakota told a local newspaper that if he's learned one thing during this August recess holding town hall meetings with constituents - it's don't cut Medicare and Social Security. Thune told the paper that that message is one that he'll be taking back to Washington, DC. Of course - the rest of the Republican Party still doesn't get it.

That's because they're either not holding ANY town hall meetings, or they're holding private, corporate-funded town halls that charge constituents 40 bucks to ask a question, or they're busy keeping "watch lists" to intimidate their constituents from asking tough questions.

Either way - John Thune seems to be the only Republican who's actually doing his job - and listening to the American people who are in lock-step opposition to the Republican's radical agenda.

-Thom

(Will more Republicans get the message? Tell us here.)

A "For the Rich, By the Rich" Economy
Thom plus logo

There's more evidence of a widening wealth inequality gap in America thanks to 30-plus years of Reaganomics. According to The Atlantic magazine - two-thirds of all new income in America between 2002 and 2007 went to just the top 1% of Americans. That's 2 out of every 3 dollars in America being sucked up by the richest of the rich.

Not to mention - that the wealthiest 400 Americans - our nation's most senior oligarchs, who own more wealth than the bottom 150 million Americans - have seen their incomes double over the last twelve years while their tax rates have been cut in half. Talk about a "for the rich, by the rich" economy. Wealth inequality in America is at levels not seen since the 1920's - and we're now a more unequal nation than the Ivory Coast, Pakistan, Ethiopia, and Kazakhstan according to data from the CIA Factbook.

So when the entire American middle class disappears, then can we all accept that Reagan's vision of America - and the direction that the current Republican Party has this nation headed - will lead us all toward ruin?

Boy receiving much needed water.

Together with LDS and humanitarians like you,

IRD will provide clean drinking water and save lives

in the Horn of Africa.

Dear Arnold,

IRD has issued an urgent call to donors to provide life-saving help to thousands of individuals in the Horn of Africa. Lives are at risk due to severe drought and famine. The United Nations has called this East Africa's worst drought in 60 years.

According to official reports, large numbers of Somali refugees are fleeing conflict and drought in their homeland and walking to the border crossing point at Dolo Ado into Ethiopia. A majority of the refugees are young children and women. Officials have stated that many thousands of children may die if they do not receive emergency help within the next few weeks.

From Ethiopia IRD Senior Program Officer Richard Wagner reports, "the scene is chaotic and aid is short. IRD is investing resources in areas along the Somali border providing clean water to as many families as possible. Our immediate focus is on saving lives but we are also developing long-term programming to help families recover their ability to care for themselves."

To address this need, the Latter-day Saint Charities (LDS) has provided IRD with a generous $170,000 emergency response in-kind grant. This 2-month grant is the first of two phases which will enable IRD to sustain its response to the drought which is expected to continue until the anticipated rainy season starts in November. The grant enables IRD to scale up its capacity to provide water trucking, jerry cans and other critical relief to save lives and reduce suffering among drought-affected populations in Ethiopia.

The LDS grant will make donations from private individuals, businesses, and foundations an even better investment. Whatever the amount donated, the impact will be further leveraged to help the most vulnerable. IRD is working along the Somali/Ethiopian border to provide clean, portable drinking water to 24,000 persons in 16 villages, in 2 districts of Ethiopia.

Please donate now to save lives and reduce suffering. The need is so great. There is still time, please join us to avert what could become the greatest catastrophe in more than a generation.

If you are interested in learning how you can become involved in raising awareness or funds in your community, please contact us at Advancement@ird-dc.org.

Learn more about this campaign

Dear Arnold,

We have a jobs crisis in this country, and we know we can't cut our way to prosperity. Yet for too long, some members of Congress have pretended that brutally cutting the budget and irresponsibly cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy will get people back to work.

The private sector will not create the jobs we need in this country any time soon, so it's up to the federal government to step in.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky has introduced the "Emergency Jobs to Restore the American Dream Act" that would put over 2 million people back to work and reduce unemployment by an estimated 1.3%. It's exactly the type of ambitious and aggressive response to the jobs crisis that we need.

Tell Congress: We don't need cuts, we need jobs. Click here to automatically sign the petition telling Congress to support the "Emergency Jobs to Restore the American Dream Act."

There's nothing mysterious or hard to understand about the bill.

Tens of millions of Americans are either unemployed or under-employed. Besides the personal pain this causes, the impact of legions of unemployed Americans on our economy is staggering.

At the same time, there's a huge need in our communities for more teachers, firefighters, health care workers and police officers. Many of our public schools are rundown and need to be repaired and upgraded. And there are all sorts of unmet community needs, like maintaining our public parks, that could be addressed by paying people to take them on.

The "Emergency Jobs to Restore the American Dream Act" would fund jobs programs to put millions of Americans back to work in these areas.

Large-scale federal jobs programs worked during the Great Depression, and they'll work now.

Tell Congress: We don't need cuts, we need jobs. Click here to automatically sign the petition telling Congress to support the "Emergency Jobs to Restore the American Dream Act."

It's time for Congress to stop using the jobs crisis as a pretext for even more corporate welfare and go big on the jobs front. The best way we can lower the federal deficit and get our economy moving again is getting people back to work.

Tell Congress: We don't need cuts, we need jobs. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

Thank you for speaking out for an aggressive plan to get Americans back to work.

Not all Billionaires are Created Equal
Thom plus logo

Maybe we should take a tip from France. The French government just introduced a new debt reduction package that includes a 3% income tax increase on people making more than $720,000 a year. But no one is screaming about class warfare in France today - that's because it was the millionaires and billionaires themselves who asked for the tax increase. In an open letter - some of the wealthiest people in France wrote, "We, the presidents and leaders of industry, businessmen and women, bankers and wealthy citizens would like the richest people to have to pay a 'special contribution'."

The letter goes on to say, "When the public finances deficit and the prospects of a worsening state debt threaten the future of France and Europe and when the government is asking everybody for solidarity, it seems necessary for us to contribute." As in - they realize there's not much quality of life in being rich while living in a poor country - a sentiment that most billionaires here in America don't appear to understand.

I guess it IS true - not all billionaires are created equal.

Contract for the American Dream
We are Rebuilding the American Dream

Can you help us build support for the Contract for the American Dream by sharing it with your friends and family?
Share

Dear Friend,

Wow! In just two days, more than 175,000 people have joined you in signing the Contract for the American Dream.

Lots of media outlets have covered the Contract, and our full-page ad ran yesterday in The New York Times. But if we're really going to change the conversation to be about jobs, not cuts, we need to make sure lots more people know about the Contract.

Can you click here and help us build support for the Contract for the American Dream by sharing it with your friends and family?

We've launched a version of the Contract that makes it easy to share the whole thing, or just the planks you think are most critical, with your friends and family.

Momentum is already gathering behind the Contract. Yesterday, joined by 100 members of the American Dream movement, Rep. Jan Schakowsky unveiled her "Emergency Jobs to Restore the American Dream Act" in Chicago. It would create 2.2 million jobs by putting people to work rebuilding infrastructure, teaching our children, and protecting our communities, and pay for it by taxing millionaires and billionaires.

And hundreds of folks have planned events to take the Contract directly to members of Congress during the August recess. Deborah Curtis, a MoveOn Council leader, went to a jobs fair where Republican Rep. Ben Quayle (AZ-03) was speaking and handed him the Contract and demanded he sign it. (He didn't. Yet :-))

But we need your help to make sure as many people as possible hear about the Contract for the American Dream.

Click here to check out the interactive version of the Contract and share it with friends. You can also discuss how to make the different planks of the contract a reality with other progressives, or even share them individually.

Thanks for all that you do,

–Van Jones and the rest of the Rebuild the Dream team

Contract for the American Dream
We are Rebuilding the American Dream

If you're fed up with Washington and tea party politics, sign the Contract for the American Dream today. If we get 100,000 signers right away, we'll put the Contract in a full page ad in The New York Times for politicians to see. Just clicking below will add your name.
Sign the contract

Dear Friend,

Since the tea party took our economy hostage to protect tax breaks for the wealthiest among us, we've seen:

the first downgrade of U.S. credit in history;
the stock market drop 10%;1 and
Congress' disapproval rating hit a historic peak.2

So, if you're sick and tired of Washington's games, you're not alone. But just getting angry isn't going to solve anything. What we need are solutions and action. What we need are Jobs, not Cuts—just like Americans want.3

And while Washington was negotiating a debt deal that sold out working people, 130,000 everyday Americans considered 25,000 solutions to create A Contract for the American Dream.

It's a Contract to create jobs, invest in America, and rebuild the American Dream for all. And as a first step, if we can get at least 100,000 citizen signers right away, Rebuild the Dream and MoveOn will join together to put the Contract in a full page ad in The New York Times, so America can see the solutions to our broken politics and struggling economy writ large.

Below are the main points of the Contract. Be among the first of many to sign it and get it in The New York Times this week.
Clicking here will add your name.

A CONTRACT FOR THE AMERICAN DREAM
Americans who are willing to work hard and play by the rules should be able to find a decent job, get a good home in a strong community, retire with dignity and give their kids a better life. Every one of us...has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That is our covenant, our compact and our contract with one another...

1. Invest in America's Infrastructure

2. Create 21st-Century Energy Jobs

3. Invest in Public Education

4. Offer Medicare for All

5. Make Work Pay

6. Secure Social Security

7. Return to Fairer Tax Rates

8. End the Wars and Invest at Home

9. Tax Wall Street Speculation

10. Strengthen Democracy

Clicking here will add your name.

We'll be putting the principles of the Contract into action almost immediately. But the first thing we need to do is get Washington's attention with a full page ad in The New York Times backed by over 100,000 Americans.

Then we'll take it directly to members of Congress during the August recess, start fighting for it in our local communities, and make it part of our national vision.

Be part of this crucial beginning by signing the Contract for the American Dream today.

Clicking here will add your name.

Thanks for all that you do,

–Van Jones and the rest of the Rebuild team

P.S. See below for the full text of the Contract and then click here to sign your name to it.

A CONTRACT FOR THE AMERICAN DREAM

"I have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American Dream."

–Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1963 March on Washington

We, the American people, promise to defend and advance a simple ideal: liberty and justice... for all. Americans who are willing to work hard and play by the rules should be able to find a decent job, get a good home in a strong community, retire with dignity and give their kids a better life. Every one of us—rich, poor or in-between, regardless of skin color or birthplace, no matter their sexual orientation or gender—has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That is our covenant, our compact, our contract with one another. It is a promise we can fulfill—but only by working together.

Today, the American Dream is under threat. Our veterans are coming home to few jobs and little hope on the home front. Our young people are graduating off a cliff, burdened by heavy debt, into the worst job market in half a century. The big banks that American taxpayers bailed out won't cut homeowners a break. Our firefighters, nurses, cops and teachers—America's everyday heroes—are being thrown out onto the street. We believe:

AMERICA IS NOT BROKE. America is rich—still the wealthiest nation ever. But too many at the top are grabbing the gains. No person or corporation should be allowed to take from America while giving little or nothing back. The super-rich who got tax breaks and bailouts should now pay full taxes—and help create jobs here, not overseas. Those who do well in America should do well by America.
AMERICANS NEED JOBS, NOT CUTS. Many of our best workers are sitting idle, while the work of rebuilding America goes undone. Together, we must rebuild our country, reinvest in our people and jump-start the industries of the future. Millions of jobless Americans would love the opportunity to become working, tax-paying members of their communities again. We have a jobs crisis, not a deficit crisis.

To produce this Contract for the American Dream, 131,203 Americans came together online and in their communities. We wrote and rated 25,904 ideas. Together, we identified the 10 most critical steps to get our economy back on track and restore the American Dream:

INVEST IN AMERICA'S INFRASTRUCTURE. Rebuild our crumbling bridges, dams, levees, ports, water and sewer lines, railways, roads and public transit. We must invest in high-speed Internet and a modern, energy-saving electric grid. These investments will create good jobs and rebuild America. To help finance these projects, we need national and state infrastructure banks.
CREATE 21ST-CENTURY ENERGY JOBS. We should invest in American businesses that can power our country with innovative technologies like wind turbines, solar panels, geothermal systems, hybrid and electric cars, and next-generation batteries. And we should put Americans to work making our homes and buildings energy efficient. We can create good, green jobs in America, address the climate crisis, and build the clean energy economy.
INVEST IN PUBLIC EDUCATION. We should provide universal access to early childhood education, make school funding equitable, invest in high-quality teachers, and build safe, well-equipped school buildings for our students. A high-quality education system, from universal preschool to vocational training and affordable higher education, is critical for our future and can create badly needed jobs now.
OFFER MEDICARE FOR ALL. We should expand Medicare so it's available to all Americans, and reform it to provide even more cost-effective, quality care. The Affordable Care Act is a good start and we must implement it—but it's not enough. We can save trillions of dollars by joining every other industrialized country—paying much less for health care while getting the same or better results.
MAKE WORK PAY. Americans have a right to fair minimum and living wages, to organize and collectively bargain, to enjoy equal opportunity and to earn equal pay for equal work. Corporate assaults on these rights bring down wages and benefits for all of us. They must be outlawed.
SECURE SOCIAL SECURITY. Keep Social Security sound, and strengthen the retirement, disability, and survivors' protections Americans earn through their hard work. Pay for it by removing the cap on the Social Security tax, so that upper-income people pay into Social Security on all they make, just like the rest of us.
RETURN TO FAIRER TAX RATES. End, once and for all, the Bush-era tax giveaways for the rich, which the rest of us—or our kids—must pay eventually. Also, we must outlaw corporate tax havens and tax breaks for shipping jobs overseas. Lastly, with millionaires and billionaires taking a growing share of our country's wealth, we should add new tax brackets for those making more than $1 million each year.
END THE WARS AND INVEST AT HOME. Our troops have done everything that's been asked of them, and it's time to bring them home to good jobs here. We're sending $3 billion each week overseas that we should be investing to rebuild America.
TAX WALL STREET SPECULATION. A tiny fee of 1/20th of 1% on each Wall Street trade would raise tens of billions of dollars annually with little impact on actual investment. This would reduce speculation, "flash trading," and outrageous bankers' bonuses—and we'd have a lot more money to spend on Main Street job creation.
STRENGTHEN DEMOCRACY. We need clean, fair elections—where no one's right to vote can be taken away, and where money doesn't buy you your own member of Congress. We must ban anonymous political influence, slam shut the lobbyists' revolving door in D.C. and publicly finance elections. Immigrants who want to join in our democracy deserve a clear path to citizenship. We must stop giving corporations the rights of people when it comes to our elections. And we must ensure our judiciary's respect for the Constitution. Together, we will reclaim our democracy to get our country back on track.

Please donate to our First Responders' Fund today. Your donation is a sound investment: it will be used wisely and efficiently to save lives, reduce suffering, and give people the tools they need to begin rebuilding their lives. IRD has vast expertise in delivering emergency relief, having responded to nearly every major emergency of the past 10 years. We have distributed food to those affected by drought in Niger, helped displaced Iraqis rebuild their livelihoods, provided shelter and hygiene kits to those affected by the Haiti earthquake, and we continue to help Pakistani farmers recover from the devastating 2010 floods.

An Extremely Unfair Agreement

Unfair deal

Over Bernie’s strong opposition, Congress approved and President Obama signed a deficit-reduction deal that slashes programs for working families without asking the wealthiest Americans and the most profitable corporations to pay a nickel more. "This country needs deficit reduction, but we need to do it in a way that is fair and which will result in economic growth and job creation. This proposal does neither,” the senator said. In a Senate speech and a flurry of television interviews, Bernie called the deal “extremely unfair,” “immoral” and "grotesque."

In poll after poll, Americans said they wanted shared sacrifice

The American People Are Angry
The American people in poll after poll said they wanted wealthy individuals and large corporations to pay their fair share of taxes for deficit reduction. They also said they wanted bedrock social programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid to be protected. In the end, Congress did exactly the opposite of what Americans wanted. “Is it any wonder, therefore, that the American people are so angry with what's going on in Washington?” Bernie asked in a Wall Street Journal column last Friday.

Goodbye Gas Guzzlers

Cars and light trucks would get 54.5 mpg by 2025 under new fuel economy standards agreed to by automakers and the Obama administration. Bernie introduced legislation last year with the same goal. "The historic agreement is a huge step forward for saving car owners money at the gas pump, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and creating American jobs," Bernie said.

Questions about nuclear safety

Nuclear Safety

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission came under fire at a Senate hearing for foot dragging on task force recommendations to beef up reactor safety in the United States in the wake of Japan's nuclear crisis. “Delay is not an acceptable option," Bernie said at an Environment and Public Works Committee hearing. “We must do everything in our power to make sure nuclear power plants are safe and that this country never experiences what happened in Japan.”
