Dear Arnold-

Last Tuesday, Chip Cravaack voted to end Medicare and privatize Social Security. This Tuesday, I introduced my mom at a rally outside Cravaack’s office where his constituents gathered to demand he protect Medicare and Social Security. As we delivered this message in person, hundreds of others added their voices to ours online in an overwhelming show of support.

Thank you to those who took the time to sign my mom’s petition telling Cravaack to keep his hands of off Medicare and Social Security and start getting people back to work! You joined over 700 people in sending this critical message to Chip Cravaack.

This is going to be a long and expensive fight, but we won't let Cravaack hide from his record . Your contribution today will get organizers and canvassers in the field who will make sure that every voter in the district knows what Cravaack’s priorities are.

While Cravaack spends his time in Washington trying to figure out how to cut billions in benefits to our seniors, my mom has been traveling across the district listening to the concerns of middle-class Minnesotans.

Every night she comes home with stories of people who just can’t find a job or seniors who are worried about how they’ll afford their healthcare. These are the issues that our Representatives should be focused on every single day.

Because the campaign keeps my mom incredibly busy we’d like to do something special for her 50th Birthday on Sunday (don’t tell her I told you how old she is, she can still ground me). I hope you’ll help me surprise her with one of the gifts below to help her beat Cravaack, and stand up for Minnesota families.

$25 equips an organizer for a week
$10 pays for a canvasser's phone line
$5 supplies a volunteer doorknocker for a day

Thanks again for all your support and thank you in advance for making my mom’s 50th extra special. I know that with all of your help we will be able to win back this seat and stop this extreme Tea Party agenda that prioritizes special interests ahead of our seniors.

Sincerely,

Nate Clark

P.S. Over 700 of you have already told Cravaack to keep his hands off of Medicare. Contribute now to keep the pressure on him as the House considers yet another bill to end Medicare.

Dear Arnold,

This week Pat Buchanan wrote, astonishingly, that Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik "may be right" in his perception of a Crusades-like conflict between Christians and Muslims.1

So why is MSNBC paying Buchanan to broadcast his extreme views on air?

Buchanan should be able to say just about anything he wants. But MSNBC — a network that is now working to position itself as the progressive alternative to FOX News and CNN — doesn't have to give him a platform.

Tell MSNBC: Fire Pat Buchanan! Click here to automatically sign the petition.

MSNBC President Phil Griffin considers the network "the place to go for progressives."2

But promoting bigotry and racism is anything but progressive. Buchanan's laundry list of unabashed white-supremacy includes downplaying slavery,3 writing a book in which he advocated shutting down our borders to maintain white dominance and espoused the genetic superiority of whites,4 complaining that confirming Elena Kagan would put too many Jews on the Supreme Court,5 and even defending Hitler. Repeatedly.6

Now, Buchanan is validating Breivik's radical, anti-Muslim ideology — the ideology Breivik wrote about extensively in his 1,500 page manifesto, citing numerous prominent American right-wing voices of Islamophobia,7 especially regarding the Park51 Islamic Community Center. Buchanan himself likened the center to the Nazi's trying to march in Skokie, Illinois 3 decades ago.8

Whatever MSNBC's new slogan Lean Forward might mean to them, it's the exact opposite direction of the rhetoric that Buchanan stands for. If the network wants to maintain any credibility, it's time to leave Buchanan behind.

Thank you for fighting hate.

Arnold --

Today, President Obama and our military service chiefs certified the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

In 60 days, it will be done.

This is huge and welcome news for every one of us who opposes discrimination of any kind. But now, the fight for equal rights moves on.

Here's the next front: This week the President endorsed a bill to repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, a discriminatory law that forces the federal government to ignore the rights of those in same-sex marriages, even those performed in states where gay marriage is legal. The New York Times has said it "ranks with the most overtly discriminatory laws in the nation's history."

President Obama sees repeal as a moral and legal necessity, while the Republican candidates oppose it. But millions of people -- gay and straight -- are watching what they're doing, want this law gone, and will make their voices heard.

Can you be one of them? We're putting together the group of people who want to be at the forefront of our efforts on this issue as the campaign develops over the next 16 months -- the first to know when news breaks, and the first to help spread the word to your friends and in your community. Join us for what's next:

http://my.barackobama.com/Equal-Rights

Under DOMA, rights afforded to straight married couples -- such as receiving Social Security benefits for spouses or filing joint federal income-tax returns -- do not apply to same-sex married couples.

It's no secret that the President has long opposed this law. In February, he directed the Justice Department to stop defending a key portion of it in court. And this week, he endorsed the first Senate bill that would repeal the law in its entirety.

We can already see the direction the other side is headed in response. They called a witness at the Senate hearings this week to testify that repealing DOMA would "pave the way for polygamous and other polyamorous unions." That's the type of rhetoric we should be prepared to hear in the run-up to the next election.

But the broad American consensus is on our side. We've all seen that change in Washington doesn't come overnight, and fighting for it can carry significant political risks. When opportunities to make real progress come up, it's critical to show Washington that millions of voters have President Obama's back.

This is a defining issue for many of us in this movement, and for this President. Join this fight today:

Thanks for your help,

Messina
